Nigel always had an ambition one day to build a life size horse sculpture from steel in some unique form.
Then a year ago he found the time in his life at last to fulfil his long dreamed ambition, having no artistic background other than a small flare for clay sculptures at school some 33 years ago. Magico and Maximus are both designed from the measurements and one photo under saddle of the real Andalusian Stallion called Magico - he was a beautiful Stallion Nigel used to shoe and is his favourite breed.
Maximus took 470 hrs to build over a 5 month period, weighs 402kg and was zinc galvanised dipped
Maximus is a steel equine muscular abstract and depicts most of the superficial muscle groups of the body created in an artistic cage formation - sternocephalic; brachiocephalic; splenius; venteral serate; trapezius; cranial superficial pectoral; deltoid; triceps; lateral triceps; latissimus dorsi; thoracic ventral serrate; caudal deep pectoral; external abdominal oblique; cutaneous trunci; tensor lateral fascia; superficial gluteal; cranial trochanter; biceps femurs; semitendinosus; caudal superficial pectoral; masseter; gracilis; semimembranosus; biceps femoris; radial carpal extensor; common digital extensor; Lateral carpal flexor; long digital extensor; lateral digital extensor; deep digital flexor.
Maximus was created cutting and forging concave shoeing steel lengths for the body and legs after the muscle cage was created. His mane and tail were cut from 2.5mm metal plate in 30x1000 pieces and forged then twisted to shape to create movement. His gladiatorial warhorse head dress again was cut and forged from steel plate with zinc 10mm butted chainmail for the back of his jaw dress - the muzzle was forged from one hollow 150mm steel sphere.
These sculptures are unique and the only ones of their kind in existence.
The creation of these sculptures has lit a new chapter in Nigels life; his next sculpture adventure is to create Secretariat along with his jockey Ron Turcotte, crossing the line at the Belmont stakes in June 1973. Secretariat won by 31 lengths in a time of 2.24 and sealed the Triple Crown and broke all World Records .
