Nigel always had an ambition one day to build a life size horse sculpture from steel in some unique form.
Then a year ago he found the time in his life at last to fulfil his long dreamed ambition, having no artistic background other than a small flare for clay sculptures at school some 33 years ago. Magico and Maximus are both designed from the measurements and one photo under saddle of the real Andalusian Stallion called Magico - he was a beautiful Stallion Nigel used to shoe and is his favourite breed .
Magico took nearly 570 hrs to build over a 6 month period…
213 old farriers rasps
102 old half round blacksmith files
5-1/2 metres of scaffolding pipe
1-1/2 square metres of chainmail
1-1/2 square metres of 3mm steel plate
6 bike chains
4 feet of 5 inch 3mm pipe
24 metres of 25x3mm flat steel bar
8 metres or galvanised rope
2 bike gear wheels
Numerous forged concave horseshoe lengths, flat and round sections.
Magico weighs 550-600 kgs approximately and everything you see has been handcut, hot forged and shaped by hand and welded. Along with his body, the mane and tail are all made from farriers rasps and contain 70 rasps in his tail and 44 rasps in his mane alone. He is fully rustproofed with a professional oil and clear metal varnish.
These sculptures are unique and the only ones of their kind in existence.
The creation of these sculptures has lit a new chapter in Nigels life and his next sculpture adventure is to create Secretariat, along with his jockey Ron Turcotte, crossing the line at the Belmont stakes in June 1973. Secretariat won by 31 lengths in a time of 2.24 and sealed the Triple Crown and broke all World Records.
